Naushad Ali (1919 – 2006) was one of the foremost music directors for Bollywood films, and is particularly known for popularising the use of classical music in films. He was also a respected and published poet and formally launched his book of Urdu poetry entitled Aathwaan Sur ("The Eighth Note"). The album titled "Aathwan Sur – The Other Side of Naushad" has 8 ghazals with lyrics and composition by Naushad, arranged by Uttam Singh. Naushad was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1982, and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.

A. Hariharan (* 1955) is a leading ghazal singer and composer as well as playback singer in several languages and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. In 2004, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. Hariharan's first guru was his mother Amamelu, a renowned Carnatic vocalist. In his teens, inspired by the songs of Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, Hariharan developed a passion for ghazals and started training in Hindustani music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
