Daniélou, Alain: The Ragas of Northern Indian Music
21,- EURO, hardcover 403 p.
The first part (96 p.) traces the history of Indian music and the continuity of its theory and practice for more than 2000 years. It is based on
many years' research into the vast ancient Sanskrit literature of music. These treatises lie in the form of scarcely catalogued manuscripts
throughout the public and private libraries of India and had hitherto remained unexplored.
Part Two (276 p.) transcribes and studies in detail 50 typical Ragas. Each is preceded by a Sanskrit poem in translation which depicts the
atmosphere. Then follows an analysis of the scale, covering its intervals and expression, a study of the theme with its characteristic motives and
finally a typical development. The transcriptions are given in Western staff notation. Microtonal variations (shrutis) are indicated by the shape
of the note heads, a system invented by Danièlou himself. The book is rounded off by an extensive bibliography, mainly on Sanskrit sources, and a
discography.
The book provides composers with a source of new inspiration and enables practising musicians to play and study some of the main North Indian Ragas.
Written in the mid 20th century it has remained an immensly valuable reference work with a unique approach ever since.

Raja, Deepak: Hindustani Music - A Tradition in Transition
432 S., Foreword by Shivkumar Sharma, Introduction by Lyle Wachovsky (India Archive Music),
Hardcover, 35,- EUR
Archive Music.
In "Form,
Idiom and Format" und "The World of Ragas" diskutiert er Formfragen der Aufführungspraxis und des kreativen Umgangs mit dem Phänomen Raga. "The

Ruckert, Georg: Music in North India - Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture
paperback, 100 S., 16 b/w ill., incl. CD, 19,90 EUR
North India is home to a wealth of musical traditions composed of many different styles, genres, and practices. Music in
North India provides a representative overview of this music, discussing rhythm and drumming traditions, song composition and
performance styles, and melodic and rhythmic instruments. Drawing on his experience as a sarod player, vocalist, and music teacher,
author George Ruckert incorporates numerous musical exercises to demonstrate important concepts. The book ranges from the chants of
the ancient Vedas to modern devotional singing and from the serious and meditative rendering of raga to the concert-hall excitement
of the modern sitar, sarod, and tabla. It is framed around three major topics: the devotional component of North Indian music, the
idea of fixity and spontaneity in the various styles of Indian music, and the importance of the verbal syllable to the expression of
the musical aesthetic in North India. Featuring vivid eyewitness accounts of performances and descriptions of interviews with
performers, Music in North India examines the form, structure, and expression of North Indian music while also illuminating its
profound religious and cultural significance. A 70-minute CD containing examples of the music discussed in the text is packaged with
the book.

Wegner, Gert-Matthias: Vintage Tabla Repertory - Drum Compositions of North Indian Music
large format, 544 p., with 2 audio CDs - 69,- Euro out of stock/out of print at the moment
Gert-Matthias Wegner is professor of ethnomusicology in Berlin and has been studying tabla with Nikhil Ghosh for more than 20 years. This monumental
work is his attempt to preserve the best orally transmitted compositions of his teacher and to make them available to coming generations. Nikhil
Ghosh learnt from Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Amir Hussain Khan and Ahmedjan Thirakwa - three of the most eminent tabla maestros of the mid 20th century.
His repertory thus comprises different styles (gharanas) and is unique in content as well as in quality. Wegner starts with an introduction to life
and work of Nikhil Ghosh, the various forms of tabla material and his system of notation. The main part of the book (full 460 p.!) consists of
notated tabla compositions. Most compositions are performed on the CDs in a speed which is easy to follow. An incredibly valuable source for any
advanced tabla player!
