NARKA

Tuning the sympathetic strings of instruments like sitar, sarod, sarangi, esraj and dilruba can be a very difficult task – it can be very tough to get a good grip on the small pegs and move them without jerks and slipping. Sometimes people just give up, play with their sympathetic strings out of tune and thus sacrifice the full potential beauty of sound. A solution to this problem is the mechanical tuning aid called „narka“. The narka is set tightly onto the peg like a wrench. It can be gripped with the whole hand and thus allows a fine and exact movement of the peg. Tuning each sympathetic string to the exact pitch becomes much faster and easier like that.

MIZRAB

Mizrabs are available in the sizes XS, S, M, L and XL.

The size is defined by the length of the actual striking wire, measured from the tip to the winding (see drawing):

  • XS shorter than 1.6 cm
  • S around 1.8 cm
  • M around 2.0 cm
  • L around 2.2 cm
  • XL longer than 2.4 cm

Mizrabs are handmade and are thus available in a variety of shapes and proportions. E.g. the length of the front wire and the back wire may differ by 2 – 3 mm. In such cases we have taken the average measurement.

The perfect mizrab should fit the finger pretty tight; it is not supposed to move or slip at all while playing. On the other hand it should not hurt or injure the finger either. Therefore it is normally necessary to carefully bend the mizrab in order to mould its shape to the individual finger.

PEGS

Our raw pegs for Indian string instruments are made in one piece from hardwood. They consist of a conic bar, which is stuck inside the instrument, and a broad carved head, which is gripped for moving the peg. The different labellings refer to the shape of the head. The peg spiral has a spiral-shaped head, and the peg blossom's head is carved like a blossom. The raw pegs are considerably thicker than required. They need to be adjusted individually to the holes of the instrument (or vice versa). A wood turner will be able to bring the raw peg down to the required diameter. Alternatively you can also try and file the raw peg into the right shape, if you have a skilled hand and a good file. The raw pegs do not have any hole for attaching the string. The right position for the hole can only be determined after the peg has been fitted to the instrument. However we can deliver raw pegs with a standard hole upon request.
