Rashid Khan (* 1966) of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana is one of the foremost contemporary classical singers. He is the great-grandson of the gharana's founder and studied with his maternal grand-uncle Nissar Hussain Khan. The Rampur-Sahaswan style of singing is closely related to the Gwalior gharana, which features medium-slow tempos, a full-throated voice and intricate rhythmic play. Rashid Khan includes the slow elaboration in his vilambit khayals and also developed exceptional expertise in the use of sargams and sargam taans. He is influenced by the styles of Amir Khan and Bhimsen Joshi. His renderings stand out for the emotional overtones in his melodic elaboration. This brings a touch of modernity to his style, as compared to the older maestros, who placed greater emphasis on impressive technique and skillful execution of difficult passages. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013.
