C.R. Vyas (1924 - 2002) was an influential and popular classical singer of the 2nd half of the 20th century. He studied with Govindrao Bhatambrekar of the Kirana gharana, Rajamrambuva Paradkar of the Gwalior Gharana, and Jagannathbuwa Purohit of the Agra Gharana. He had an open throated voice and created his own style with a nice blend of different flavours from all these gharanas. However, the influence of the Gwalior gayaki, was quite prominent. Among his disciples are Prabhakar Karekar, Sanjeev Chimmalgi, his son Suhas Vyas and Jitendra Abhisheki. C.R. Vyas also composed several new ragas and more than 200 vocal compositions in different ragas under the pen-name Gunijan. In 1987 he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and in 1992 the Padma Bhushan.
